First time skied here in Jan 2014. Hunter Mountain is in the towns of Hunter and Lexington, just south of the village of Hunter, in Greene County, New York, USA. At approximately 4,040 feet in elevation, it is the highest peak in the county and the second-highest peak in the Catskill Mountains. Hunter Mountain ski resort is located about three hours up the New York State Thruway (I-87) north-northwest of New York City. It features a 1,600-foot vertical drop. As the Catskills' premier winter resort destination, Hunter Mountain boasts renowned terrain for all abilities, an impressive vertical drop, and some of the most reliable snow conditions in the East! As a pioneer in snowmaking technology since 1960, Hunter Mountain is heavily committed to producing some of the best snow conditions in the East. Hunter has even been crowned "The Snowmaking Capitol of the World". Over 1,100 snow machines are capable of producing large amounts of snow in minimal time. Hunter has enough air and water available to run half of the snowmaking arsenal at once under marginal snowmaking conditions, and nearly every gun under optimal conditions. Overall snowmaking capacity equals 40 tons of snow per minute. Hunter can cover one acre (equivalent to size of a football field) with one foot of snow every hour. In an average season, Hunter turns about half a billion gallons of water into snow. Hunter has the fastest recovery time of any ski area in the world!
